The word “sunnah” means, a way, course, rule, mode, or manner, of acting or conducting life, or a way of acting that has been instituted, or pursued, by former people and by those after them.

The Qur’an never mentions the word sunnah in relation to the Prophet, only the sunnah of Allah and that of former generations.

Allah says:

Similar sunan, have preceded you, so travel throughout the land and observe how the end was for those who denied. [3:137]

Allah wishes to clarify to you and guide you to the sunan of those before you and to accept your repentance. And Allah is Knowing, Wise. [4:26]

There is to be no discomfort upon the Prophet concerning that which Allah has imposed upon him. Such is the sunnah of Allah with those who came before. And Allah’s command is always a destiny decreed. [33:38]

Such is the sunnah of Allah which has preceded before. And never will you find any change in the sunnah of Allah. [48:23]

But many still assume one must follow the Prophet’s “sunnah” because the Qur’an says:

Say, “If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your mistakes. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” [3:31]

However, the words “follow me” here does not necessarily refer to his “sunnah”, as Allah says:

So if they argue with you, say, “I have surrendered myself to Allah, and [so have] those who follow me.” [3:20]

Indeed, the most worthy of Abraham among the people are those who followed him and this prophet, and those who believe. [3:63]

Follow, what has been revealed to you from your Lord, there is no deity but Him and turn away from the polytheists. [6:106]

And when you do not bring them a sign, they say, “Why have you not made something up?” Say, “I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This is enlightenment from your Lord and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe.” [7:203]

So since the Prophet was only commanded to follow what was revealed to him, the phrase “follow me” means to surrender to Allah and follow what has been revealed. Furthermore, Allah says:

And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he had a wish (or thought), Satan threw into it. But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes His ayat precise. And Allah is Knowing and Wise. [22:52]

O Prophet, why do you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [66:1]

So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness for your mistake and exalt with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning. [40:55]

These verses prove that the Prophet had his own thoughts and made his own decisions and at times he even came to the wrong conclusions.

There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often. [33:21]

Although there’s no command in this ayah, as it is khabr and not amr, the Qur’an uses the same language to describe Abraham and those who were with him as well.
