DISCLAIMER: I will be translating “Aalim” and “Ulama” as scholar(s), although this is not the actual meaning.

Many fabricated narrations [lies against the Prophet] have been spread by people and some of these reports are about the virtues of scholars, even though Allaah aza wajal warns us that many of the scholars are misguided, love wealth, and lead people astray further away from Allaah:

O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and the monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and avert [them] from the way of Allaah. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allaah – give them tidings of a painful punishment.

(at-Tawbah 9:34)

And the Prophet said:

You will follow the [same] ways of those before you, inch by inch, and step by step, so much so that if they had entered into the hole of the lizard, you would follow them in this also…

(Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Saheeh Muslim, Sunan ibn Maajah)

Since the scholars of the Jews and Christians were the first to corrupt their religion and misguide their people into polytheism and disbelief, the Muslim scholars have also been doing similar, following the same path as people before them.  It is unfortunate that many Muslims today follow wrong beliefs on how great a scholar is, due to fabricated hadeeths being spread around.  InshaAllaah some of those reports will be discussed and only the isnaad that comes in the major hadeeth books will be brought…

First False Hadeeth

…Scholars are inheritors of the Prophets…

(Sunan Abi Daawood, Sunan ibn Maajah, Jaami at-Tirmidhi)

This is one of the popular reports that has been widespread, quoted on numerous occasions, and also falsely related to al-Bukhaari.  It is part of a longer hadeeth that has already been discussed, and  it comes through several unreliable reporters.

عاصم بن رجاء الكندي is weak (ref. ad-Daaraqutni) and narrates ambiguously from [‘An] دَاوُدَ بْنِ جَمِيلٍ  who is unknown (ref. ad-Daaraqutni).  دَاوُدَ بْنِ جَمِيلٍ  is also ambiguous when he says from [‘An] كثير بن قيس who is weak (ref. ad-Daaraqutni) and his real name is questionable, whether it is Kathir b. Qays or Qays b. Kathir.

These men all are in the other isnaad from the major books of ahadeeth.

Another person named شعيب بن رزيق appears in a different sanad and ibn Hazm declared him weak.

Second False Hadeeth

…Virtue of the scholars over the worshiper is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars…

This is part of the same hadeeth as the first one.  I chose to mention the words exclusively because people speak about it as if it is a separate narration with a different sanad.   So this is also a false narration due to the same reasons mentioned above.  As they are part of the same report.

Third False Hadeeth

Virtue of the scholar over the worshiper is like my superiority over the least of you…

(Jaami’ at-Tirmidhi)

سلمة بن رجاء was weak (ref. an-Nasa’i) and he narrates from الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ who was differed over and was not said to be thiqah.

Fourth False Hadeeth

“Three will intercede on the Day of Resurrection: The Prophets, then the scholars, then the martyrs.”

(Sunan ibn Maajah)

سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ is not thiqah and narrates from  أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ who is reliable.  أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ narrates from عنبسة بن عبد الرحمن القرشي who was accused of lying and was abandoned (ref. Abu Zurra).  He is then ambiguous in reporting from [‘An] علاق بن أبي مسلم who was unknown.

Fifth False Hadeeth

“Lo! Indeed the world is cursed. What is in it is cursed, except for remembrance of Allaah, what is helpful in that, the ‘Aalim and the learning person.”

(Sunan ibn Maajah, Jaami’ at-Tirmidhi)

بن ثوبان dependability  is differed upon, so there is doubt over his reports and should not be taken unless proven otherwise.  Also, عبد الله بن ضمرة السلولي is not thiqah and his narrations should not be taken as evidence.

علي بن ثابت he is good but his reliability has been tainted due to him making mistakes (ref. Abu Zurra).  And the rest of the sanad has the same problems as the previous one.

To be continued…
